Scope of Program:
All first-year students at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design complete the Foundations program, which includes coursework in observational drawing, space/form/materials, visual and color dynamics, image and drawing concepts, spatial concepts, understanding the visual, introduction to advanced study and research, practice and methods.
Communication Design students focus on typography, computer studio, communication design, critical and creative forms, history of design, information graphics, identity graphics, advertising design, package design, art history and professional practices. All students complete a service learning process and senior writing seminar and create a portfolio and thesis exhibition.
Illustration students concentrate on illustration media, computer studio, critical and creative forms, typography, figure drawing, illustration problem solving, art history and professional practices. All students complete a senior writing seminar and service learning process and create a portfolio and thesis exhibition.
Time-Based Media students complete courses in animation, video, sound, critical and creative forms, contemporary issues in time-based design and professional practices. Students may choose to follow the Animation or Video Track. Animation Track students take courses in drawing for animation, special effects, compositing, 3D computer animation and multimedia production. Video Track students focus on pre-production, post-production, video editing and installation. All students complete a writing seminar and service learning process and create a thesis project and exhibition.
A minor in Animation is available. A portfolio is required with the application; the application process also includes an interview. Need-based art scholarships are available.
