Rockland Community College – Suffern, New York
Rockland Community College (RCC) of the State University of New York (SUNY) has announced the launch of a brand new Animation & Interactive Media Track in its Graphic Design AAS degree program. The new track joins the Visual Communication Track, which includes animation, design, drawing, and digital art courses.
The 64-credit Animation & Interactive Media Track places a stronger emphasis on animation with courses such as Animation Principles, Intro to 3D Animation, 2D Animation, Drawing for Animation, Scripting for Interactive Media, Intro to Computer Modeling, and History of Animation.
According to a recent RCC press release, courses for the track will be taught by faculty “with deep industry expertise, including award-winning 3-D animators and illustrators.” These same instructors will mentor students “as they develop competitive portfolios toward successful job placement or transfer.”
Eileen MacAvery Kane, RCC's Art Chair and Graphic Design Program Coordinator, added, “the new Animation and Interactive Media Track is responding not only to students' interest in these areas, but also to the job market and where graphic designers are finding work these days. She goes on to explain that, “Graphic Design follows contemporary culture, as many jobs do. People now consume information much more through interactivity – interactive apps, online, social media, gaming. The job market and areas of employment for graphic designers directly follows that.”
Although the program prepares students for employment in animation, fine arts, graphic design, illustration, photography, and many other fields, RCC graduates often transfer to “prestigious professional art schools” such as Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), School of Visual Arts (SVA), Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), Cooper Union, and many others.
Registration for winter session is open after the second week of November.
In 1959, Rockland Community College became the 18th community college to join the SUNY system. Located just 25 miles from NYC, the school serves 8,000 students enrolled in 47 degree and certificate programs in the arts, humanities, business social sciences, technologies, health professions, math and sciences. Each year, more than 100 institutions accept RCC transfer students. Highly motivated students in RCC's acclaimed honors program transfer within SUNY or to such colleges as Harvard, Yale, Cornell, Brown, Georgetown and Columbia.
